Rent the Runway Opens Its First Chicago Store

On April 30, Rent the Runway will unveil its most fashionable look yet: a 2,940-square-foot store in the Gold Coast. This will be the brand’s third freestanding store to date, and its first in the Windy City.
“Chicago is already home to some of our most loyal customers,” says Jennifer Hyman, CEO and co-founder. “We wanted to bring them the option to rent, see, and try on beautiful designer dresses in person. In fact, as part of our retail launch in Chicago, we have partnered with a variety of local, smart, entrepreneurial women to create content that highlights their passions, pursuits, and the inspirations behind them.”
The store is done up in shades of gold, silver, and champagne—it has to match the gowns, after all—and is full of perks such as seating enclaves, in-store styling appointments, and same-day rentals for those who, like Cinderella, are never quite sure they’re going to make it to the ball until the last minute. And of course, the biggest perk is actually trying on the dresses in person instead of crossing your fingers and clicking “rent” online. Four-day apparel rentals start at $30 and run up to $800, while accessories rent at price points from $5 to $400.
Hyman says that each store’s merchandise is tailored to “the needs of the women in the area,” but doesn’t give specifics. However, she says that their customers generally go for “elegant” looks and “classic” designers, such as Badgley Mischka, Nicole Miller, Shoshanna, and Halston Heritage. “Chicagoans follow suit,” she says, “but also gravitate toward designers such as ML Monique Lhuillier and nha khanh.”
Stop by the new Rent the Runway store at 710 North Wabash Avenue from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.

There's a new theme every day on It's Vintage. Read more articles on today's topic:SHOWstudio.
Apparently, the crew at SHOWstudio contains more sports fans than you might expect. When the site began convening panels of experts to speak about various aspects of fashion, inspiration sprung from an unlikely source. "The idea came, oddly enough, from football!" says site editor Lou Stoppard. "We loved the idea of open, exciting, nonexclusive commentaries — giving viewers the experience of being on the front row, having a chat and debrief with the experts around them! From attending the shows, I know that the best discussion and critique often comes during those moments sitting and waiting for a show to start, or in the car afterward, and we wanted to capture that." One of her all-time favorites (below) featured Tim Blanks, Alexander Fury, and Amanda Harlech chatting it up alongside the very couture garments they were discussing.
In addition to the more pulled-back panel format, SHOWstudio has explored some individual-focused projects. The site's In Fashion feature has profiled fashion luminaries like photographer David Sims, editor Jefferson Hack, and designer Craig Green, while the In Your Face series profiles artists like Marina Abramovic (below). For fashion fans, it's the equivalent of a very chic ESPN Red Zone.

Cabbage is low in calories and high in superfood power! Whether you enjoy it raw, cooked, or fermented, you always need a head of this inexpensive cruciferous veg in your crisper — especially if you're trying to lose weight on a budget!
It has detoxifying diuretic properties: If you're retaining water, start slicing up some cabbage, and get ready to chow down. Eating water- and mineral-rich cabbage on a regular basis helps your body release excess fluid and water weight; you'll start seeing all your results from the gym sooner!
It helps you debloat: Due to its rich levels of vitamin C and vitamin A, cabbage boasts major anti-inflammatory properties. If you're eating cabbage for its debloating power, choose red cabbage over the green variety, since it boasts higher levels of these vitamins.
It supports digestion: Cabbage is packed with high levels of fiber, which keeps your bathroom schedule regular. Beyond constipation, cabbage juice has also been able to help those who suffer from regular heartburn, peptic ulcers, and other serious digestive tract issues.
Start enjoying cabbage ASAP with these healthy cabbage recipes, or consider making your own probiotic-rich sauerkraut at home!

How One of London’s Most Promising Young Designers Is Reimagining Menswear

ving graduated from Central Saint Martins’ Fashion B.A. program only last year, Grace Wales Bonner left us all speechless with her live model tableau presentation during Fashion East at London Collections: Men in January. She also captured the eye of Victoria and Albert’s curator of modern textiles and fashion, Oriole Cullen, who later asked her to be part of the museum’s Fashion In Motion series, which over the years has included Vivienne Westwood, Sibling, Gareth Pugh, Giles Deacon, and Roksanda Ilincic, among others.
Unlike her tableau at Fashion East, this time there was a subtle choreography and live choir (St. James Catholic Church Choir) accompaniment. This further added texture to the sensory appeal of her presentation and innate talent, which is inspired by representations of the black male experience and informed by diverse sources and challenging notions of authentic black masculinity. Tom Guinness came over from New York to do the styling again; the whole event felt like a reunion of sorts.
I caught up with Wales Bonner at the V&A’s Raphael Gallery, where she told me what it was like to participate in this unique event.
How did you cope with doing four presentations throughout the day?
At first I thought it was going to be a huge challenge, but in the end it worked out really well. We had an amazing production team, Bacchus, working on the show, which made sure everything ran smoothly. I really enjoyed working on so many shows, as each different performance had a different feeling and we could identify things that were or weren’t working with it and adapt throughout the day. By the end of the day everyone was feeling so confident and familiar with what they had to do that it felt like we could really elevate it and push the idea further.
I love your depiction of black male beauty—gold hair clips, jewelry, blusher—would you say you are creating majesty as, say, Kehinde Wiley does in his portraits?
There was an idea for some of the characters to feel very regal and elegant, definitely in a lot of the portraiture I was referencing; the men had that kind of affected air about them. I guess there is also that progression in Wiley’s work in which he is elevating and celebrating blackness in a very grand way, which is something I am also thinking about. In addition, the scale of the paintings and the scale of his interruption of the gallery space is something I had in mind, which relates to black painting in general, thinking about people like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kerry James Marshall.
Did Naomi Brown make her Swarovski pieces for you or did they exist prior?
I commissioned Naomi to make the headpieces for the show—they were inspired by the 1920s skullcaps that Josephine Baker would have worn. Naomi has been amazing to work with, and we will be working together this season on accessories.
